Individual Final Project

   You may have already known a bit of mobile devices with cloud computing if you subscribe our group blog. And now, some more detailed information about this topic will be expanded and discussed.


Navigation Device with Cloud Computing
    Owning to the rapid spread of cloud computing over the world, folks are desired to see more applications in diverse domains. Navigation device is one of the practical mobile applications in our life. A navigation device is a device that accurately calculates geographical location by receiving information from satellites with the use of GPS (Global Positioning System). At the beginning, this device was developed for military. As the time has gone, it became an ordinary device that helps people find a correct way to their destinations. Generally speaking, a navigation device is able to provide information such as:
(1) The roads or paths available
(2) Traffic congestion and alternative routes
(3) Roads or paths that might be taken to get to the destination
(4) If some roads are busy (now or historically) the best route to take
(5) The shortest route between the two locations
(6) The different options to drive on highway or back roads

       There is no doubt that a large amount of calculation costs a long time. With the use of cloud computing, the navigation device is able to calculate the shortest available road, distinguish traffic congestion and supply appropriate suggestions for users in an extreme short time. As Bahl, P, Han, R. Y, Li, L. E., & Satyanarayanan, M. (2012) said, blinks or speaks to the user was much easier to use than traditional navigation system. Currently, some of navigation device has such a function of speech recognition, which can be also calculation by cloud computing. What is more, cloud storage arranged for a great deal of navigation data is a significant innovation for saving time. In short, navigation device has a more effective and efficient performance with the adoption of cloud computing.


Navigation Device under Globalization
Prasad, R., Dixit, S., Van Nee, R., & Ojanpera, T. (Eds.). (2010) predicted that in a not distant future, wireless data connectivity between mobile device and satellites was destined to reshape the environment we live and impact our lives in ways that we could hardly imagine. So how is navigation device going to be and what opportunities does it have?

With the improvement of people's living standards, they do not only satisfy with the only travel information navigation, which is just the most basic function for the new generation of navigation device. What is the first jump in your mind that what is such a situation where people need a navigation device in most cases? Yes, that is when they are in tour at a strange place. In contrast to traditional product that could be observe before purchase, tourism is an intangible experience that always comes with uncertainty and risk (Goossens, 1995). People look forward to getting answer of the location of food, banks, hotels, fuel, airports or other places of interests from useful navigation. This modern forms of communication with tourists by providing information about opportunities which a tourist-friendly region offer, will be based on the technologically advanced information and navigation system, which will allow for efficient management of tourist and cultural products. The system of monitoring tourists on the move can ensure their safety and comfort on the trails.


New Business Model
Under the globalization, it has a bright prospect of cooperation with other industries such as tourism, catering and traffic, which meet the diverse requirements of users.


According to the research from UNWTO (2012), the number of tourist keeps growing as you see in the following bar chart. What a tremendous potential of it! For the aspect of tourism, navigation device can guide users to scenic spots as well as top-ranking hotels as a guider. Therefore, tourism industries are willing to provide professional knowledge and detailed information that attract tourists as advertisements. For the aspect of catering, it seems that tourists prefer to have distinctive indigenous food. Multiple choices for tourists activate the enthusiasm of the cooperation between navigation and catering. So do other industries. In fact, it is a win-win business model. I believe that more and more other industries will join it in the coming day as the requirements of users are growing invariably. In addition, globalized navigation can share the accurate, detailed and fresh information by some self-developed internal software instantly without time lag through cloud. Also, it allows them to handle and resolve different requests from different places efficiently. 



New Knowledge Management
Knowledge management (KM) is the process of capturing, developing, sharing, and effectively using organizational knowledge (Davenport, 1994). An emerging technology may bring a radical innovation in knowledge management. In general, in order to provide a better service for customers, service industries have to face a challege with increasing need of IT and infrastructure involved to keep and manage customer information. The more sophisticated the IT landscape is, the more investment will be required for getting the suitable IT infrastructure in place. Cloud computing provides such a suitable way to reduce the total expenditure of ownership and change how they spend. In the meantime, it is also showing a capability that enables the organization to react faster towards customer demands. For these reasons, they have better ways of knowledge management and quicker access of knowledge sharing, changing, and improving knowledge sharing.


Innovation for TomTom
TomTom Company aims at developing a series of outstanding GPS navigation devices as well as GPS sport watches. Its strategic approaches are to provide more humanization design and comprehensive function for products. Certainly this means that it must make more cooperation with third party industries. The newest navigation device is available for loud computing, speech recognition, touch screen, and playing music, DVD as a personal digital assistant. Navigation device is not only itself but also a multimedia device. This idea innovation was quickly accepted by users and became popular.


Conclusion
In conclusion, a navigation device is a device that accurately calculates geographical location by receiving information from satellites. With the use of emerging technology cloud computing, the calculations of navigation could be optimized and provide a better performance. Under the globalization, the cloud-based industry has a bright prospect of cooperation with other industries such as tourism, catering and traffic, which meet the diverse requirements of users. A win-win model facilitates the sustainable development among them.
